This weight seems to fit well with the Salvador / Ysart Brothers theme, notwithstanding the current uncertainty for attributions of other similarly "feathered" weights. Certainly, the inner motif of four canes is seen in many other items covered in this article. The surrounding ring of yellow-red-white canes with a cruciform centre is another feature common to the "Vasart" range. The powdered white (grey) ground of this item is quite unusual, as are the pulled canes which form the feathered outer design element. It is quite easy to see where the pulling of the canes has started and stopped. But it is not known how the pulling was actually achieved. Was it done with an expert free hand, or was there a more controlled way of obtaining an almost perfect circle with the ends joining exactly? Perhaps it was as "simple" as using a natural turn of the weight on the iron whilst holding a "pick" in the same relative offset position. |
