Closepack

This is a fairly typical example of a closepack weight using canes of low to medium quality. Had the setting of the canes towards the centre been more symmetrical, the design may have been closer to a full concentric. But even though we can make out two reasonably well defined outer rows, the mixture of cane types and colouring defines this item as a closepack.

Just to the right of the centre, above the blue-and-white cane, can be seen a substantial piece of frit caused by localised contamination within the main glass mix. The presence of frit is seen in various items from the earlier "Vasart" period - in fact, two of the butterfly weights shown in this article have frit within the dome.
