This butterfly has a green aventurine body with a separate, applied head section and two thick yellow antennae. In this example, the antennae are pointed upwards giving a foreshortening in this top view. The wings are formed from flattened millefiori canes. The inner garland canes are visually similar, but not identical, to the butterfly's lower wings. The outer row of canes are perhaps the strongest feature in this weight which has a watery, mottled orange/brown ground. Although not clear from the top view, there is a group of four canes as a central motif beneath the butterfly and these canes are identical to those in the outer garland. Note that the upper wings of the butterfly are the same as those in the example which is set flush to the ground (Item 13). The silvery piece at the 10 o'clock position is frit near the top of the dome - an unfortunate element in a less than perfect glass mix. |
