Height: 1 1/4 inch, Length: 3 5/8 inch, Width: 2 1/2 inch. An unmarked pair of oval salts. The shape and the patterning are quite unremarkable but these items do indicate one of the variations in colouring of marbled (slag) glassware. White and purple give a pleasing combination. But note how the shading of the purple varies considerably, even within the same piece. No doubt items of this type were massed produced, with pairs (or sets) simply put together prior to distribution. Assuming this to be the case, it is possible that the colouring could also have varied because of mixing items from different days work, and therefore possibly different glass batches. Close inspection of the photos may reveal uneven edges to these salts. In fact, the finishing is very sharp at the upper edges and this has contributed to the many small chips from years of handling. Formerly in the Cyril Manley collection. |
