When viewed in reflected light, the bust appears completely black. When seen in strong transmitted light, the mottled brown or orange colouring is quite clear. The photos for this page have been deliberately arranged to show both colours in each view.

This colouring of the base glass may be of interest to anyone who thought that the glass for this item was fully black. In fact, there are examples which show as black in both reflected and transmitted light - but which was the norm? Was there a norm? Are there many base glass colours for this item?
