A superb close pack millefiori
Inkwell with matching stopper. A few different shapes are known for Paul Ysart
inkwells and some close pack versions show a clear border of the ground at the
outer edge of the base. In the example shown here, the canes cover the entire
surface of the thin white ground, which is just visible at the edge of the
stopper.
A total of 63 cane types, both
simple and complex, have been identified, some of which are very tiny but are
shown here in the same size as all others. Note that the final two canes are
probably the same basic structure but their setting gives different visual
appearances. A number of the canes appear more than once in the inkwell, an
obvious case being the outer garland canes which alternate around both the base
and stopper.
Yellowed glass indicates 1940s
period. UV tests confirm pre-Caithness.
The script signature and date are
believed to have been added by Paul Ysart at the time of a visit by a former
owner, or for a friend or family member. This inkwell was previously in the
collection of the late Mr Cyril Manley, well-known glass collector and author.
It may have been Mr Manley for whom the script details were added. The Monart
Glass label is of the type used post-war, but has no added text.
