The first of these Inkwells is reasonably typical of many known early Vasart items. The second is of much better quality. It may be true that Salvador made all the early Vasart Inkwells. It may also be true that some Inkwells were in fact made pre-war at the Moncrieff factory and are therefore Monart, not Vasart. The second example is one that may be a Monart item. It was exhibited at Broadfield House Glass Museum as part of an exhibition of British Glass Between The Wars and was said to have made in the 1930s by Salvador for a friend of Mrs. Moncrieff, but as yet this is unproven. I have personally seen two other Inkwells that are clearly of the same quality as the second example above. The striping in the neck of all three is much finer than in regular Vasart pieces. Also, the stoppers of the better examples appear to be slightly larger than in typical Vasart work. Further research is required. |

The weight at Col 1 above not only has the "Y" signature cane (set in the centre) but also has an early period, round Vasart label proving the dating to the Ysart Brothers period. The example at Col 2 has a "Y" cane (set as part of the inner row of canes) but has no label. At Col 3 is a weight that is visually very similar to the "Y" ones, but of slightly lower quality - it does not have a signature cane, but certainly appears to have been made by the same hand as the others. |

The first two Rows above show a variety of basic Concentric weights, some of very good quality and others less so. The items at Row 1, Col 4 and Row 2, Col 2 both have a good mottled yellow and white ground. In Row 3, the Ashtray and the weight next to it have two common canes and have a very similar overall appearance. The weight is very much like one sold through the eBay Internet system, having etched marking to the base: "Ysart Brothers Made In Scotland". The item at Row 3, Col 3 is visually similar to the "Y" weights except that the inner row is composed of completely different canes. It includes a relatively uncommon "stemmed rose". |
