Unknown Maker Bottle

A similar Inkwell to this example was offered in auction in early 2004 as "Monart". This is thought to have been the case with at least one other. The UV tests show that these are certainly not Monart.

The plain blue well section covers almost all the base and this is consistent with the two others I have seen. A particular point to note is that in this bottle (and most likely others of the type) when looking down through the neck, no canes can be seen. There may actually be a clear glass section at the base of the well portion but examination with strong lighting shows that the base has no central cane. This, in itself, is good reason to doubt a "Monart" or "Vasart" attribution.

Although the neck has a height much the same as regular Vasart items, the diameter of the rim, at 5.2 cm (2 1/16 inch) is much greater than Vasart, which are around 4.4 cm (1 11/16 inch).

The stepped form of the base is reminiscent of the green and pink bottle discussed in this article although, in this blue one, it is more clearly defined.

This bottle, and the green / pink one, both have a similar feature that I do not believe occurs in Vasart (or Monart) items. The canes in the stopper are set flat such that in profile they are almost invisible, with just a clear upper half of the stopper being seen. In Vasart stoppers, the canes tend to fill the whole dome.

Overall height, including stopper: 11.0 cm (4 5/16 inch)
Diameter of body: 9.9 cm (3 15/16 inch)
Diameter of stopper: 4.0 cm (1 9/16 inch)
